Golden Moon’s Honey Pear (review)

by Lainie P on August 29, 2010

Claudius doesn't care for cough syrup either.

Name: Honey Pear

Brand: Golden Moon Tea

Type: Black tea, flavored

Form: Loose Leaf

Review: I normally like Golden Moon teas, but I am sorry to say that Honey Pear is an exception.

Admittedly, it all went wrong from the beginning.

I was eager to try this tea, as I am fond of both honey and pear, and thought that a blending of the two could result in an elegant, delicious tea. But when I opened the package, I was overwhelmed by a sharp, pungent honey-like aroma that rather put me off. I decided to brew the tea anyway, as I know that flavored teas do not always taste like they smell.

The tea did infuse to a gorgeous honey/red color. Unfortunately, the pungent nose remained. I sipped, and I sipped again. While this tea does have some pleasing, almost liqueur-like notes, they are marred by a strange, off-tasting bitterness that reminded me of cough medicine. Even worse was the lingering, peculiar aftertaste I am not sure if the problem is the little bits of bee pollen that are added to the blend, the pear flavoring, or the tea itself, but sadly, I just couldn’t finish this cup of tea.
