Review: As a dedicated breakfast-eater, I am always on the prowl for a good breakfast blend. While I am not a fan of the British habit of adding milk and/or sugar to tea, I definitely think that the idea of a traditional English breakfast tea, stout, substantial and palate cleansing, is a beautiful thing.
The trouble is that many breakfast teas are simply uninteresting. They are blended to stand up to milk and sugar, which is fine, but it seems as though many tea blenders cut corners on their breakfast blends because they figure that the additives will cover a multitude of sins.
Fortunately for us, Harney & Sons knows what’s what, and produces several good-quality breakfast teas. Their Supreme Breakfast tea is a blend of Keemun and Assam, an inspired blend that makes for an tasty brew. The fairly small and broken dry leaf is dark brown scattered with a bit of light brown tip. The dry nose is faint, but has some notes of spice and tobacco.
The infused liquor is a deep red-brown, with a decidedly more powerful nose. As others have noted on Steepster, this tea showcases the best of both Assam and Keemun. There is the maltiness of Assam along with the wine-y notes that I like so much in Keemun. It is relatively full-bodied, yet smooth: It does its job when it comes to clearing the palate after breakfast, but doesn’t need milk or sugar to make it palatable. Yes, you could add milk and sugar to this stout blend, why would you? It is quite good enough to drink on its own.

Sounds like a tea worth waking up for.

Jenious: It certainly is! Suited to families where one party likes milk/sugar and the other likes their tea plain!
