Black Dragon Pearl Tea from thepuriTeaName: Red Dragon Pearl

Brand: thepuriTea

Type: Black tea

Form: Rolled pearls

Review: This is a fun little tea from thepuriTea. It is a reasonably tippy hong cha from Yunnan, rolled into little pearls. I found that about 4 pearls to 12 ounces of water made for a lively, if surprisingly light brew. The light-medium bodied liquor is red-amber in color, with a fruity, cocoa-y nose.

On the palate, the fruit and cocoa notes remain, with a hint of spice, making it a bit different from many of the other Yunnan hong chas that I’ve tried (they are normally spicier, and I don’t normally taste such strong fruity notes). As this tea is considerably lighter than many Yunnans, I am inclined to recommend drinking it during the summer as an alternative to heavier, creamier black teas.

Incidentally, this tea goes great with a breakfast of Mexican-style chorizo and eggs. Don’t ask me why.
