Review: Back in January, I reviewed a previous version of this tea. At the time, I noted that while the tea was good, I had some difficulty figuring out how to bring out its more interesting floral notes. That batch of Golden Monkey was remarkably “soft”, blending complex floral and honey-cocoa notes in a way that demanded a considerable amount of the drinker’s attention.
This new batch of Golden Monkey is a bit more robust and intense. The dry leaf is as fun to look at as before: So full of fuzzy tips that it almost looks like bits of yarn. The nose is redolent of cocoa and spice, and it infuses to an orange-brown. The nose of the infused tea contains some cocoa, but the spice is stronger. On the palate, the tea’s spiciness tends to dominate over the cocoa and floral notes. It is sweet, full-bodied, and creamy, making it it more soothing than refreshing.
I think I prefer this batch of Golden Monkey, as I prefer warm spice over floral notes in black tea. Try it. I’d love to hear what you think.
