Review: This is a tea that takes some explaining.
First of all, it is important to understand what icewine is. Icewine is a dessert wine that is made from grapes that have been allowed to freeze on the vine. The freezing concentrates the sugars, and the result is a thick, sweet, super-intense dessert wine that is wonderful on its own, or makes an excellent match for lemon cake. (I favor the Lemon Crown cake from Trader Joe’s, myself.)
Now the clever folks at Metropolitan Tea Company decided to blend icewine flavor with Ceylon tea. Ceylon often has lemony notes, which makes it a natural base for an icewine tea.
When I opened the box, I immediately noted the intensely fruity, slightly floral scent of icewine. I then infused it to a deep reddish amber, still dominated by the icewine nose. The tea itself was fruity, slightly sweet, and very tasty. Yet, I also felt that, served hot, the tea was lacking something. After all, it’s been flavored with icewine. . .perhaps it might be better cold?
I popped two teabags into my glass brew mug, filled it with cold water, and let it infuse in my fridge for about 8 hours. The result was a crisp, refreshing, delicious iced tea, with the sweet, fruity flavor of icewine and robust Ceylon. It was so tasty, it made me long for a hot summer day when, I expect, it will be really wonderful.
