Teatulia’s Lemongrass Herbal Infusion (review)

by admin on January 13, 2010

Name: Lemongrass

Brand: Teatulia

Type: Tisane (herbal infusion)

Form: Pyramid bags, loose leaf available.

Cost: $13.00 for two ounces loose leaf, $23.00 for 50 bags, quantity discounts available.

Review: Lemongrass tisane is pretty ubiquitous, and it seems that most retailers have it on offer.  I, for one, like lemongrass, and since I think that lemon rind or juice tastes “off” unless fresh, I strongly approve of using it to provide lemony notes in flavored teas and tisanes.

The trouble is that many lemongrass tisanes are made from poor quality lemongrass with dull or pungent flavors. It is also true that inexpert tea blenders often use too much of it, such that it dominates the brew. So while I like lemongrass, I am also suspicious of it.

Still,  I’ve liked Teatullia’s offerings in the past, and was happy to try their samples of their lemongrass tisane. Teatullia’s lemongrass is sold as-is, with no other flavorings.

And I am glad of this.

The tisane infuses to a pretty yellow-green with a nose of warm citrus and spice. The liquor is surprisingly rich and full-bodied:  Smooth, tangy, and actually buttery. I have never had a lemongrass quite like this.

Good for 2-3 infusions. Doesn’t get bitter, so you can keep the pyramid bag in your cup and add more water as necessary.

Highly recommended.
