Review: This is one strange looking tea. The leaves are dark brown and twisted, and there are plenty of large twigs and stems in the blend. The nose is even stranger (in a good way): A melange of tobacco and dried fruit, sharp and intense at the beginning, though it gets more friendly as you continue to sniff.
(About the dried fruit: Teas Etc claims that this tea tastes of golden raisins. This may be so, but raises are my arch-nemesis of the food world, so I prefer to think of the nose as more like dried figs.)
The tea infuses to a surprisingly light gold with a sweet, tobacco-y nose. On the first infusion the tea’s flavor is somewhat muted, but by the second infusion the sweet, spicy fruit and honey begins to emerge. Delicious.
Golden Dragon Aged Oolong is good for several infusions, and after the first two infusions, doesn’t get bitter and disagreeable if the leaves are left in the cup/pot (I use my large red gaiwan for drinking this tea).
Incidentally, I discussed this tea with Teas Etc’s founder and owner, Beth Johnston on a recent Lainie Sips podcast. Apparently Teas Etc gets complaints about this tea from people because of its twig content (never mind how it tastes). Please be open minded and give this tea a chance. It is pretty remarkable.
