5 Reasons Why You Should Join Steepster

by Lainie P on January 17, 2010

Back in June I did a brief podcast review of Steepster, the then-fledgling tea social network. Since then, Steepster has made some great strides and is rapidly becoming the place for Internet tea-people to hang out.

If you are unfamiliar with Steepster, here’s the scoop:

Steepster lets tea drinkers keep a real-time log of what they are drinking (and publish their logs to other social media networks), maintain a list of teas in their collection, rate teas, provide preparation information, and comment on other community member’s logs and reviews.

Not on Steepster yet? You should be. Here’s why:

1. Non-Tea-Bloggers Drink Tea Too: Just because someone doesn’t blog on tea doesn’t mean they don’t have something important to say about it. Steepster provides a platform for non-bloggers to share what they are drinking, and what they think about what they are drinking. This is cool.

2. Tiny Tea Companies Need Our Support: Really good tea, really special tea, can be hard to find. Often it is the tiny tea companies that have the connections to get the good stuff and have the business model that allows them to sell limited quantities of remarkable teas.

These tea companies usually don’t have a huge budget for advertising. Steepster helps their customers help keep them in business.

3. Tea People Are Cool: I like tea people. Tea people are usually thoughtful, interesting, and kind. Steepster provides an environment in which tea people can communicate with each other, right over a cup of tea.

4. Peer Pressure: We live in a coffee and energy drink culture. We tea people need to change this. We can do our part by updating our Steepster status so that our Twitter and Facebook friends know what we are drinking and, hopefully, might be curious enough to give our favorites a try.

5. Preparation is Important: One of the niftier features of Steepster is that tea-raters have the option of indicating their steep times and temperatures in their logs. This helps log-readers prepare their own tea well, and gives an indication of the reliability of the review. If someone is scorching their green tea, you will know it.

Ms. L,
In the face of adversity, what with all these Tea Party and ‘porkulus’ protests throughout your country, well pleased I am to see you maintaining your interesting blog. And, Steepster looks like fun, but I’m not too sure of the little mind control trickery of recording one’s steeping times and brewing temperatures. Surely this be a Mancunian trick? (No, I haven’t mis-spelled!)

Yours, Aye!
