Brand: Peet’s Tea

Type: Black tea

Form: Loose leaf

Cost: $7.45 per 4 ounces

Review: I like Assam, but I don’t often like the Assams I try. The trouble seems to stem from the common addition of milk and/or sugar to Assam teas, such that many producers/retailers figure that the additions will cover up the tea’s imperfections. The result is often a bitter, disagreeable brew that is only drinkable with milk and sugar.

Fortunately the good folks at Peet’s Coffee & Tea realize that a good Assam is one that doesn’t need milk or sugar.  They have come up with this reasonably priced, malty, biscuity tea that ought to meet the needs of purists and milk/sugar lovers alike.

The dry leaf is rather small and dark brown with plenty of golden tip. The nose isn’t particularly strong on the dry leaf, but what there is of it is surprisingly fruity. The cup infuses to a dark brown/copper liquor, with a malty nose that has a backnote of burnt caramel.

The tea itself is surprisingly smooth and slightly sweet, with a decidedly malty characteristic. There is a slight bitterness/astringency in the finish, but this can be controlled by minimizing the steep time. This is classic Assam, and would be great for clearing the palate of such breakfast foods as sausages and bacon, or even sticky sweet rolls.

The tea comes in a very pretty tin which is suitable for reuse and can make a fine holiday or hostess gift. The tea can be purchased online or at any Peet’s store: If you buy your tea at the later, you may be offered a free cup of tea along with your purchase.
