Type: Teaware, travel mug, infuser

Review: The Libre Tea Glass is another invention in the quest for convenient loose-leaf tea, an quite a welcome one at that. The “tea glass” is actually an all-in-one infuser and travel mug that offers two different infusion options so that serious tea-drinkers can make their tea the way they like it.

The design of this bit of teaware is a bit hard to describe, which is why I advise checking out the video above, though I’d note that this is a cross between a “glass” and a travel mug. The base of the tea glass is double walled for insulation: The inner wall is glass (to keep the tea tasting good) and the outer wall is either glass or polycarbonate, the latter being sturdier. The glass’s lid is in two parts: The base has a fine mesh screen attached, and it screws onto the glass, while the top part of the lid screws onto the base.

As I mentioned earlier, there are two ways to infuse your tea with the Libre Tea Glass: The first is to simply place the leaves into the glass container, fill with hot water, and place the lid on top. Admire the unfurling of the leaves. When you are ready to drink your tea, simply remove the top half of the lid and sip. The mesh screen prevents the leaves from floating into your mouth.

The second way to infuse your tea allows you to discontinue the infusion process, preventing a bitter and disagreeable brew. To infuse your tea in this manner, pour hot water into the glass, screw the lid base on, and place tea leaf into the base. Replace top of lid, and make sure that both parts are screwed on tightly to each other and to the glass. Flip the Tea Glass over and allow tea to steep. Once finished, flip the Tea Glass over again, let the liquid drain from the top into the glass for a few seconds, and then remove the entire lid to drink. Pretty nifty, I say.

This is a remarkably clever and easy-to-use device, and I strongly recommend it. I’d only include a couple of warnings: First of all, like all insulated travel mugs, the Libre Tea Glass keeps your tea very hot. Be careful when first tasting the tea so as to not burn yourself. Secondly, if using the lid as an infuser, be sure to let it drain a bit into the glass before removing the lid, so as to avoid hot water spraying all over yourself and your desk or car.

What I like about this Libre vessel is that you can choose either setting for whether you’d like to steep for just a short time or leave those leaves in there. That’s an ideal functionality–having the choice.
