Jun Chiyabari’s Hand Rolled Himalayan Tips (review)

by Lainie P on October 3, 2009

hrhtName: Hand Rolled Himalayan Tips

Brand: Jun Chiyabari

Type: Black tea

Form: Loose Leaf

Review: Jun Chiyabari is a small tea producer in Nepal which makes some excellent and unusual teas. Their Hand Rolled Himayalan Tips is a prime example.

Like many teas from this region, the appearance and taste of this tea defies standard tea categories: Hand Rolled Himalayan Tips is a fully oxidized black tea, which in appearance and flavor, is far more similar to that of an oolong. The dry leaf is made up of tightly rolled olive green and silver tips and leaves. Its nose is vegetal: Steamed green bell pepper and and slight backnote of sandalwood.

Once infused, the liquor takes on a decidedly greenish cast, though there are shades of brown (looks like a gunpowder green to me), the sandalwood notes on both the nose and palate take center stage. The medium bodied tea is incredibly smooth and quite refreshing.

This tea has some stamina as well. Unlike most “black” teas, Hand Rolled Himalayan Tips stands up well to multiple infusions. In fact, if you find the sandalwood in the first infusion to be a bit pungent, feel free to dump it and try the second infusion, which is decidedly more balanced.

I strongly recommend this tea to oolong lovers and those who enjoy the unusual. It is, incidentally, a bit hard to find, but here are the online retailers that I have been able to locate:

House of Tea (Sweden)

Le Palais des Thes (France)

Gillards (United Kingdom)

Quite an enjoyable review since I’ve heard a lot about this tea from the tea lovers online who like to try different unique varieties. And this one is indeed unusual. But in a good way. Defying categorization is a virtue, in this case. –Teaternity
