Name: China Keemun Imperial

Brand: SpecialTeas

Type: Black tea

Form: Loose leaf

Cost: $7.50 for 1/4 lb, quantity discounts available

Review: I adore Keemun, and this is a most interesting version. The dry leaf is very small, dark charcoal brown, with a strong, earthy, “peaty” nose with a backnote of red wine.

In the cup, it infuses to a dark red-brown, with a strong nose that resembles tobacco leaves and earth. On the palate, this is a less-refined Keemun than others that I have tried. It has a moderate astringency and a slight (but not unpleasant) bitterness. A robust earthiness dominates the flavor, with the characteristic red wine flavor of Keemun lingering in the background.

Recommended if you like stronger, earthier teas. Great price, too!

Tip: This makes a “different” tasting iced tea: Earthy and potent. Try it!
