SpecialTea’s China Fujian Golden Monkey (review)

21NY1F12TQL._SS500_Name: China Fujian Golden Monkey

Brand: SpecialTeas

Type: Black Tea

Form: Loose Leaf

Cost: $15.00 for 1/4 pound

Review: Golden Monkey is one of my favorite China black teas, and this is a very nice specimen from SpecialTeas.

The dry leaf is dark brown with a smattering of light golden tips. The nose is very intense: Cocoa powder with a decidedly herbal backnote that reminds me a bit of a pile of Autumn leaves that has been left to stand awhile.

The tea infuses to a red-brown liquor with a nose of cocoa and a bit of spice. The taste is assertive and chocolaty, reminding me of cocoa nibs (cocoa beans). There is a slight bitter backnote similar to unsweetened chocolate as well. The tobacco notes are also present, rounding out the flavors of this tasty tea.

Tip: This is a killer dessert tea. Its cocoa notes are great if sipped on its own, or try it with a chocolate and/or peanut butter dessert.

I’m all for tea that tastes like chocolate naturally without being flavored at all. It’s the good, bitter taste of the unsweetened cocoa. This kind of tea is a good way to get it while still having tea and not going for any actual chocolate. –Teaternity
