Review: Travel mugs present a problem for tea drinkers: Yes, you can certainly add a teabag to a travel mug, but fishing the darn thing out is messy, inconvenient, and dangerous (too much risk of burning yourself). Keeping the bag in the mug isn’t a good option, unless you like over-infused tea.
Fortunately, Mighty Leaf Tea, innovator of Biodegradable Tea Pouches, is now offering something quite nifty: A tea travel mug especially designed to work with tea bags!
Using the mug is easy:
- Just take a tea bag, fold its tag in half, and insert the folded tag through a slit on the underside of the mug lid.
- Draw up the string through the lid and then fill the mug itself with hot water.
- Place the lid, along with dangling teabag, onto the mug and allow to steep.
- When steep-time is through, draw up the string, so that the top of the teabag is securely wedged in the “tea bag slot”.
- Either sip tea from mug, or pour out into the drinking vessel of your choice.
Tips:
- Do not overfill the Tea Top Travel Mug: Doing so can result in continued partial immersion of the teabag.
- Resist urge to pull up too hard on the teabag string: If there is true tea in the bag, you don’t want to squeeze out disagreeable bitterness.
- As is true with all insulated mugs, be very careful when taking your first sip: These mugs keep tea very, VERY hot and you don’t want to risk burning yourself. . .particularly if you are driving!
- The Tea Top Travel Mug was designed to work with Mighty Leaf’s roomy tea pouches. If you are using a tea bag produced by another company, you might have to experiment a bit to make sure that the tea bag stays put.

This might be a good mug to take to a place like Starbucks when you just want a simple hot tea. They give generously-sized teabags in those big coffee chains, and the stuff costs less than most other drinks. It’s a win-win situation. –Teaternity
