Brand: Jing Tea

Type: Teaware, glass infuser

Review: The designer of Jing’s Tea-iere is one clever individual: He or she has managed to combine the elegance of a glass teapot with the convenience of an all-in-one tea infuser.

The Tea-iere consists of a glass carafe (the “pot”) and a metal lid  to which is attached a fine-screened filter that strongly resembles the plunger/filter in a french press. Using the Tea-iere is simple: Tea and hot water are added to the carafe and the filter-lid is attached. When the tea/tisane has finished infusing, the tea is poured into a suitable receptacle.

Pros:

  • Beautiful, clear, sturdy glass construction. Despite its functionality, it is also a lovely piece to look at, and facilitates the pleasure of watching tea infuse.
  • Unlike plastic infusers, the glass Tea-iere does not become stained or impregnated with scents and/or flavors.
  • The filter screen is fine enough to prevent all but the very finest particles from getting into your teacup.
  • The more traditional “teapot-like” construction keeps the tea in the infuser until you are ready to pour. You don’t have to worry about a bottom valve that releases tea when jiggled or pushed.
  • Roomy design gives leaves plenty of space to properly unfurl.
  • The curve of the glass handle extends far away from the carafe, preventing burnt knuckles.

Cons:

  • The Tea-ire is made from (breakable) glass: Users might want to choose a different infuser if traveling.
  • Small leaves and particles (rooibos is a particular culprit) can get trapped in the filter screen, and it can take some doing to extract them. (I have found that using the kitchen sink sprayer to be effective in getting the screen properly clean).
  • As with all teapots and infusers, unless you will be pouring the entire contents into one cup or mug, you will need to decant the infused tea/tisane into another pot.

Recommendation: I think that this is a great option for an “at-home” or “at-office” tea infuser, particularly for those who really enjoy watching their tea infuse. Travelers, on the other hand, would probably want to consider a non-breakable option such as the IngenuiTEA.
