Review: I am fond of green oolongs, and I am happy that the good folks at Teas Etc sent me this one. It is an interesting bridge between the floral, fruity Ti Kuan Yin’s that I like so well, and the lighter, more austere green oolongs such as Alishan.
The nose on the pretty, deep green leaf is floral, sweet, and almost buttery. I prepared the tea in a gaiwan and did not decant: I wanted to see what the leaf would do if allowed to continue steeping.
The tea did not disappoint : It infused to a light gold/green, with honey and lilac notes in the nose (not unlike a relatively green Ti Kuan Yin). The taste was a bit more austere, however, than a Ti Kuan Yin , but still contained some very lively flavors and sweetness.
There was also a slight “woodiness”, along with a slightly vegetal character, to the tea’s backnote, which created a nice base for the more delicate floral/honey notes.
The tea maintained its body, and much of its flavor, through several steepings. It did not become bitter, either, despite its long time in the gaiwan. It is definitely a “workhorse” of an oolong, and great-tasting, affordable tea for everyday consumption.
