SterlingTea’s Strawberry Hibiscus Tisane (review)

by Lainie P on August 16, 2009

DSC00003Name: Strawberry Hibiscus

Brand: SterlingTeas

Type: Tisane (aka herbal infusion, no true tea in this blend), of hibiscus, rosehips, orangepeel, lemongrass, and flavoring.

Form: Loose leaf

Cost: $7.95 for a 2 ounce pouch

Review: The past 10 months or so of tea-tasting has left me suspicious of any blend that uses hibiscus: I like hibiscus, but it is simply overused. Hibiscus is both flavorful and naturally sweet, but its tartness can be overwhelming, and it often clashes with other flavors present in a blend.

So it was with a “ho-hum” attitude that I opened the package of Strawberry Hibiscus tisane from SterlingTeas. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised!

First of all, the nose on this tisane is scrumptious: Strawberry dominates, along with a citrus backnote.  The dark blend of herbals infuses up to a pretty, ruby liquor, in which the flavor of strawberry dominates, but is supported, but not dominated, by the rosehips, hibiscus, and lemongrass. The result is a simple, yet very refreshing and fruity drink.

Incidentally, while this is a perfectly nice drink served hot (and its richness does make it a most comforting beverage), I liked it even better on ice. No sugar or other sweetener was necessary.

Tips: This is a killer iced tisane. Try it first before adding any sweetener, I really believe that it does not need it.
