Harney & Sons' Hot Cinnamon Spice Tea (review)

by Lainie P on July 7, 2009

Name: Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon Spice Tea (previously Hot Cinnamon Sunset Tea)

Podcast Review Available?: Yes, click here to hear the podcast review.

Brand: Harney & Sons

Type: Black tea, flavored

Form: Silken pyramid bagged tea (available in paper bags and in loose leaf form)

Cost: Varies on form and quantity, but about $8 for 20 pyramid bags.

Review: This is one of my favorite flavored teas, even if the tea itself isn’t as evident in the brew as I normally like it to be.

The tea is a blend of black tea with three types of cinnamon, clove, and orange. All of these flavorings have a synergistic “sweetening” effect, which means that while the tea itself has no sugar added, it tastes as if it has been sweetened. This is a delectable brew hot, and makes a killer iced tea.

Harney & Sons has struck a good balance between the orange and cinnamon flavors: Each compliments the other, and neither really dominates the blend. The orange  is intensified by icing this tea, but is not overwhelming. I don’t taste a lot of tea, but it does provide some structure for the blend, keeping it from being cloying.

One word of warning: This tea can be VERY sweet, particularly if made at double strength (as one normally would for iced tea). Under no circumstances should you add any sweetener prior to tasting it!

Tips: This is a very sweet tea, and may be too sweet for some people. Experiment with leaf quantity, water amount, and steep times to get it right for you.

Try this iced, or for a real treat, fill a glass of ice with 1/3 with fizzy water, then the rest with tea. Great no-calorie alternative to cola!

As I’m tiring of plain tasting iced teas, this flavor-packed sweet tea is calling to me.

Jen,

This *is* a flavor packed tea, no doubt about it, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Hi Lainie!

I have tried this tea and after I did, I had to re read the ingredients list. I was so sure that it had stevia added or something to sweeten it. I’m not sure how it ends up being so sweet from just the cinnamon, orange and cloves. I have to assume though that there isn’t anything added to sweeten it or they would have indicated that on the list of ingredients.

Anyway, great review and very accurate description! Thanks for sharing.

I love this tea, but surely some of the ingredients have sugars? I couldn’t find “sweet cloves,” but a listing for cloves said it had sugars. I wonder if the body detects that as sugar.
