Review: Some people get confused when they see the name of this tea, and assume that it is some kind of oolong. While it is made in Taiwan (aka Formosa) and it has the word “Wuhe” (which looks/sounds like “Wuyi”), this is most definitely a black tea.
The dry leaf is whole (or almost whole) and is twisted and dark, with a sweet, honey-like nose. The leaf infuses to a dark honey-like color: Not especially bright, but pretty nonetheless. The infused nose has both honey and a touch of tobacco.
This is a remarkably smooth tea with very minimal astringency: No bitterness, though the tobacco notes continue on the palate to keep it from becoming insipid. Quite a bit of sweetness which, curiously enough, develops more fully when the tea is allowed to chill, making it a good option as an iced tea.
While I liked this tea very much, I should note that it does not have a lot of depth: If you are looking for a complex tea, this may not be your tea. On the other hand, if you don’t normally like black teas, give this one a try.
Tip: The dry leaf is rather large. Experiment with leaf amounts in order to make sure that you get the strength you want. Try it iced: It gets sweeter as it gets colder.
