Review: I think that hibiscus and rosehips might be the bane of my existence. I like them both, and think that using them judiciously is a great way to add some sweet/tart/richness to teas and tisanes. However, it is is also true that hibiscus and rosehips, particularly when used together, tend to dominate blends, and this is a fairly common problem in flavored teas and tisanes.
Unfortunately, Teavana’s Cloud 9 Rooibos is one of those blends. This is a green rooibos-based tisane that also contains fruit pieces (strawberry, lemon peel, and apple) plus mini-marshmallows and, naturally, hibiscus and rose hips.
The dry nose on this blend is intense, recalling for me a fruit punch, but is also very pretty to look at (as are most of Teavana’s blends). It infuses to a likewise intense fuchsia, with an extremely tart nose and medium body.
I sipped this tisane hot and I sipped it cold. Sadly, all I could really taste was the hibiscus and rose hips. When I put it on ice, I picked up a hint of strawberry, but that is about it. The flavor is tart, slightly sweet, but otherwise unremarkable: You could get the same result with a simple rosehip and hibiscus tisane
I really like a lot of Teavana’s teas and tisanes, but unfortunately, this isn’t one of them.
Tips: Try serving on ice, which can help cut some of the intensity of the hibiscus.
