Lainie Sips Podcast: Just One Teapot

by Lainie P on June 12, 2009

Yesterday I had a friend over for tea. During our tasting, she asked me an intriguing question:

“If someone just wants ONE ‘all-around’ teapot, what would you recommend to them?”

I answer this question in my podcast, (click on the link below to listen in), but for those who would like me to cut to the chase and offer my recommendation, here goes:

If someone only wants one teapot, they should get a glazed ceramic pot with a large, mesh, removable infuser basket. I am not crazy about infuser baskets, but if you only want one teapot, and you plan on making more than one cup/mug of tea at a time, that removable basket is the only way to prevent oversteeping.

As for options, Amazon sells the very popular HuesnBrews teapot, which is available for immediate shipping. Adagio sells the PersonaliTEA Teapot and Teavana sells the Saturn Porcelain Teapot, a Beehouse teapot design.

Remind me why you don’t like infuser baskets? Does it have to do with the leaves being unable to expand fully? I have one that I ordered from Harney, and for single 8 oz. cups it’s okay, but I always have at least 16 at a shot. I find those to come out fairly bland. Any advice?

Hi there!

Yes, my objection to infuser baskets is that they do not allow the leaves to expand fully. This is generally not a problem with smaller leaf teas, but many oolongs and even some blacks like Yunnan Golds have HUGE leaves that need plenty of space.

My advice is to remove the infuser basket, and infuse the leaves directly in the teapot. Use the infuser basket as a strainer instead.
