Name: Silver Needle White Tea

Brand: Jing Tea

Type: White tea

Form: Loose leaf

Cost: $10.60 (Approximately, converted from Great Britain Pounds) for 50 grams, quantity discounts available.

Review: I love silver needle white teas, but to describe most of them as “subtle” would be an understatement. I am pleased to say, however, that this is a silver needle of substance.

(This is also a sturdier silver needle than others I have encountered. Jing recommends preparing at 80 degrees centigrade (176 degrees Fahrenheit), which is a bit hotter than other recommendations that I have seen. I prepared the tea in a gaiwan (lid on) and had no problems with the tea becoming bitter and disagreeable due to overheating.)

But first things first. This tea, made entirely of the buds (no leaves) of the tea plant, is quite remarkable just to look at. The buds are fat, firm, and substantial, with a great deal of silvery down, much more than what I have seen on other brands. The nose is sweet and reminds me of cantaloupe melon.

When infused to a very light, delicate yellow liquor (with a hint of green), the tea has a more serious nose of a bit of cucumber along with the melon. The body of the tea is surprisingly rich, and I detect some peach, along with some light vegetal notes.

The tea is smooth drinking with a “lingering” finish and minimal astringency. If you have tried other silver needles and found them too “light”, give this one a try, and let me know what you think.
