Name: Organic Artisan Iced Tea, Classic Citrus

Brand: Rishi Tea

Type: Black tea, flavored, formulated for iced tea

Form: Tea is packed in a large paper pouch

Cost: 1 box of 5 pouches (5 quarts tea) $7.00

Review: Warm weather is coming which means that iced tea season is here! Rishi Tea, creators of such covenient tea-products such asĀ  tea powders and chai concentrate, is now offering a range of organic iced tea bags that promise great taste along with convenience.

The good folks at Rishi decided to use oil of bergamot (a small Italian orange) to flavor this tea. Oil of bergamot is used to flavor Earl Grey tea as well, though they really didn’t use enough in this iced tea to make the tea an “iced Earl Grey”. Instead, the bergamot plays a supporting role to the delicious, medium bodied black tea.

The result is what my roommate described as “one of the best” iced teas he has ever tasted: This is delicious on its own, but also goes well with food (I’ve had it with pizza and hot dogs so far.). A great “picnic” tea.

It is easy to prepare, as well. One paper-bagged pouch makes a quart of tea. Just drop the pouch into a pitcher and add 16 ounces boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes, and then add 16 ounces cold water. It is ready to pour over ice and to drink right away. Very convenient, and much better than instant iced tea.

Tips: Don’t prepare this tea with boiling water in a glass iced tea pitcher unless you are quite certain that the pitcher is heat resistant. If boiling water is added to a non-heat resistant pitcher, the glass could shatter and seriously injure someone.

If you don’t have a heat resistant pitcher, or are not sure that your iced tea pitcher is heat resistant, heat the water in a large pot, infuse it, and then add cold water. This should bring the temperature down enough to not present a danger. Always use common sense!

Rishi does sell a heat-resistant Hario Glass Pitcher for safe preparation of iced tea.
