Name: Rooibos Lemon Chiffon

Brand: SpecialTeas

Type: Rooibos tisane

Form: Loose leaf

Cost: $6.45  for 1/4 pound (quantity discounts available)

Review: The creator of this splendid rooibos obviously eschewed short cuts in its blending: After all, s/he could have added a strongly sour citrus flavoring to rooibos and be done with it. Instead, s/he chose to tease out more complex lemon notes by adding both lemon flavor and lemongrass to the blend, along with marigold flowers. The result is a deeply nuanced rooibos that in the nose reminds one of lemon pie filling cooking on the stove, while still retaining the character of a substantial rooibos on the palate.

This is not a particularly sweet tisane, nor is it overly tart. You could add honey or brown rock sugar to this rooibos to enhance its similarity to lemon chiffon pie filling, but frankly, the blending on this is so well-done, I’d hate to see anyone mess with it.

Recommendation: Great option for those who like a lemony tea but who need a caffeine-free option. A great example of careful, skillful flavoring.
