Rishi Golden Yunnan Tea (review)

by Lainie P on January 17, 2009

Video Review: Rather primitive, and done mainly for Facebook friends, but also kind of fun!

Name: Rishi Tea Organic Golden Yunnan Loose Tea

Brand: Rishi Tea

Type: Black tea

Form: Loose Leaf

Cost: Pack of 3 3.2-Ounce Tins, $23.24 (other quantities with discounts available)

Review: Golden Yunnan black teas, so called because of their high proportion of light golden “tips” (tea buds), are naturally sweet and spicy and are some of my favorite teas ever.

Rishi’s golden Yunnan takes the spice to the nth degree: Dark, strong spice with some tobacco notes, burnt caramel, and only a hint of sweetness. Prepared strong, it is made for milk (even cream) and sugar. Prepared normally, it is a delicious cup of black tea worthy of contemplation.

Recommendation: A lovely, rich tea for those who like their tea more spicy than sweet.Experiment with how much leaf you use: I found the recommended measure of 1 tablespoon to  8 oz water to be too strong if taken plain, but great with milk and sugar. One teaspoon of leaf per 8 oz water, however, made for a lovely brew. If you like the occasional cup with milk/cream and sugar,  by all means use this tea and make it strong. The result is divine.

Incidentally, tippy teas have more caffeine than non tippy teas, so if you need to get caffeinated, this is your tea.
