Here are some recent tea-related news stories and my commentary. Enjoy!
1. Sailor Acquitted in Case of Cocaine Tea: “A second sailor who failed a drug test after drinking tea made from coca leaves was acquitted Tuesday after arguing he didn’t know the tea was illegal.”
Lainie Says: Actually the “tea” was mate de coca, a tisane made from the leaves of the coca plant. Folks need to keep in mind that just because something is “herbal” doesn’t mean that it won’t have side-effects and/or won’t get picked up on a drug test. Check those ingredient labels and make sure that you know what is in your tea blend or tisane before drinking it.
2. Pay Your Cabfare in Tea?: “I got the builders who worked on my flat addicted to jasmine and white silver tip,” she laughs. “And I’ve even persuaded London taxi drivers to take tea instead of money.”
Lainie Says: Pretty nifty trick, I say! Wish I could manage it.
3. Mad About Tea: “My first experience with loose tea was in college, not long after a small shop selling loose tea opened on the town square. I never liked tea bags, but loose tea was something new. I bought a few ounces of green “gunpowder” tea and took it back to my dorm room. I dropped it on my bed and went to supper.”
Lainie Says: One tea-drinker ruminates on why he loves his tea. Charming.
4. Tampa Most Caffeinated City in the U.S.: “With the advent of rich, high-end coffees, soaring popularity of energy drinks and national fascination with green tea, our HealthSaver Caffeinated Cities Survey has brewed up some very interesting trends, findings and results,” said Brad Eggleston, vice president of HealthSaver.”
Lainie Says: The report credits the “national fascination” with green tea for much of our caffeine consumption. Now if we could just all get fascinated with oolong, we would really be getting places.
5. Ice Cream Parlor Introduces Not-So-High Tea: “For $5 each Tuesday afternoon during the quiet days of winter, ladies can take high tea, along with finger sandwiches, mini scones and sweets at Miss Lucille’s Gossip Parlor.”
Lainie Says: Expect to find more and more restaurants, cafes, and specialty food businesses expanding their tea selection.

Lainie, what do you know about Mate tea? Curious about it. It’s not all coke, is it?

I’d love to have a “high tea” ice cream parlor in my town.

No! Mate is actually a traditional drink in Latin America, and is a stimulant, but not nearly as “jittery” making as caffeine. The coca based tisane those Navy men drank was a different drink altogether!
Joie,
So would I! Afternoon tea for $5? I am SO there!
LOL! Thanks! I think I’m going to try some. I need a big caffeine boost when I work at night, but hate coffee. There’s a hot cocoa that has as much caff as coffee, but I don’t like that much either.
