Name: Oolong Formosa
Brand: Argo Tea
Type: Oolong
Form: Loose Leaf
Cost: $3.95 per oz
Review: This is a dark oolong with fairly small, broken leaves. It infuses to a red/gold liquor with a “roasted”, almost sweet nose of spice, tobacco and an hint of cocoa.
The flavor of the initial infusion is closer to tobacco and a bit of honey: This tea has a nice sweetness of its own, so don’t add any sweetener until you have tried it. Semi-light mouthfeel of 1%-2% milk with minimal astringency. The roasted notes and sweetness remind me a bit of coffee. Let this tea steep for a bit: The longer infusion helps considerably.
(Incidentally, this tea is excellent with crispy almond cookies.)
The second infusion was thinner, with the honey and tobacco more prominent and a diminished roasted quality. Considerably more astringency in the finish. I felt that this tea was “finished” after the second infusion: If you prefer your tea on the robust side, I’d advise stopping after the first steeping.
Recommendation: Tasty oolong that might be good for recovering coffee drinkers or new tea drinkers who are shy of anything other than black tea. Not particularly sophisticated: There are better dark oolongs out there, so tea snobs may want to take a pass.
