Review: Pi Lo Chun is a curious-looking Chinese green: In fact, it looks less like leaves and more like short, curly scraps of green and white wool.
The dry nose of this tea is likewise interesting. It has slight vegetal notes, along with a hint of sweet spice. The vegetal notes were more reminiscent of a Japanese green, thought the sweetnes is decidedly Chinese. The nose overall, however, is quite delicate, so you will want to be very careful when steeping this tea. Teavana recommends steeping at 175 degrees for just one minute, and I would agree with them: This tea scorches very easily.
The tea infuses to a very pale green, with a nose and taste of very young peas. Delightfully light an not at all brothy. Second infusion brought the color to more of a light gold, and the flavor had matured into something closer to steamed peapods, with more vegetal notes and less sweetness. The spent leaves are a light green, with a fair number of buds, which probably accounts for the original sweetness of this lovely tea.
Recommendation: This is a light, delicate green tea that might be a good choice for someone who is new to green teas. The trick, however, is in not over-steeping or using too-hot water in its preparation: Doing either will absolutely ruin it.
