Review:

I discovered this tea by accident one day when I visited TeaGschwendner’s shop over on State Street: I saw the label for it behind the clerk who was ringing up my purchase and asked about it. She pulled the bin out to give me a sniff, and I nearly did a header into that lovely green and white pile of joy.

Okay, perhaps this is an exaggeration, but not by much. The aroma of the green tea plus coconut really did knock my socks off. Please understand that the coconut aroma of this tea is not like that of suntan oil. It was subtle, slightly sweet, but also creamy and just a bit spicy.

Naturally I ordered some to take home so I could try it for myself.

Oh my stars!

TeaGschwendner says that this is their best selling green tea, and I can understand why. So many people claim to not like green tea because of its “green” taste: The coconut blunts any greenness and bitterness resulting in a lovely pea-green tea that is uniquely satisfying. Of all the teas that I have served at work, this has got the most raves.

The tea is wonderful hot and curiously meshes well with chocolate. But I honestly think it is at its best when it is iced: The perfect summer beverage. And if you are craving something sweet, add a bit of sweetener to the tea, a bit of milk (or half-and-half) and shake it up with ice: Makes a great creamy-latte like drink.

Recommendation:

This is an utterly delicious tea that is a pleasure to drink. Particularly good for those who want to drink green tea but haven’t yet developed a taste for it. One of the best chocolate teas ever. Try it with a brownie.

Incidentally, the blenders at TeaGschwendner blended the coconut flavor with a light hand: You not only don’t have to like green tea to like this Coconut Green Tea, you don’t even have to be a great fan of coconut, either.

Fair warning: This is a tea that is best consumed fresh, both before and after brewing it. It has pieces of real coconut in it, as well as natural coconut flavors, and the tea can taste “off” if it is stored improperly (dry) or just left to sit too long after it has been steeped. Take special care with its storage, and make it up fresh just when you want to drink it.
