Rice Dream Original in Tea (Part 3)

by Lainie P on November 25, 2008

John Plummer and I are doing a series of reviews on  non-dairy “milks” with tea. Here is our latest in this series. Enjoy!

The Milk:Rice Dream Rice Drink, Original

John’s Take: Rice Dream Original on its own is thin and somewhat sweet – probably closest to skim milk.  I really like it on cold cereal.

Lainie’s Take: The Rice Dream looked like skim milk: Thin and with a nasty bluish cast. It also had the mouthfeel of skim milk, though the flavor was very mild and somewhat similar to milk. A slight bit of chalkiness, but nothing major.

The Tea: Choice Organic English Breakfast Tea

Check out a previous review for our opinions of this tea.

The Milk in the Tea:

John’s Take: Other than making the tea a bit opaque, adding rice milk didn’t make a huge difference – it is too thin and mild.

Lainie’s Take: I agree with John: The Rice Dream added a bit of color and, maybe a hint of sweetness, but it didn’t seem to make much difference one way or another

John’s Extra Tastings: However, I also tried steeping the tea in a cup of hot rice milk (no added water).   This was much better, slightly sweet, and really quite nice.   I’ll definitely make it this way again. It did wash out some of the character of the tea, but for a milky tea made from rice milk, I think this is the way to go.

I’m not really a fan of this one, probably because of the thinness and the color and the similarity to skim milk which I never could stomach, especially in cereal. A few posts back you mentioned a hazlenut milk which I finally found! I tried it for hot cocoa, and it was a little overpowering, but I think that’s because I only used the milk and no water. I planned to try it in chai this morning, but was really in the mood for my morning fix of lemony tea. I’ll let you know how it works out!

Rice milk tastes nice when added to green tea. I had some with Teavana’s Green Tea Heaven, and it added a nice slight sweetness to this lightly flavored tea! I was also recommended to try it with matcha… which I haven’t had the chance to do yet.
