Review: I confess. . .I am hooked on hojicha, which is a green tea made up of pan-roasted bancha, kukicha or a mix of both. Rich and nutty and warming, this tea is great on a cold day. Hojicha, particularly when made from kukicha, is low in caffeine, yet its “roasted” notes are reminiscent of coffee. In fact, Michael Harney, author of The Harney & Son’s Guide to Tea, suggests hojicha as the tea for those who wish to cut down on coffee and Mark “Dr. Tea” Ukra, author of The Ultimate Tea Diet, has developed a “coffee tea” blend that includes hojicha.
Mighty Leaf’s version of hojicha is indeed quite tasty: Consisting of roasted bancha, it brews up to a lovely toasty-brown, and has a nutty, vegetal flavor that reminds me a bit of well-roasted leeks. It also has a barely-there sweet quality. While I tend to prefer a hojicha with more assertive roasted notes (I like to taste the fire and smoke), this is a tasty, mellow brew that comforts and satisfies.
You can get 2-3 infusions from one teabag.
Recommendation: If you like super-roasted, aggressive hojichas, this is probably not for you. On the other hand, if you like a softer, more mellow tea and/or you want to make the switch from coffee to green tea, Mighty Leaf’s Organic Hojicha is not a bad place to start.

Thanks for this, had never, ever heard of hojichas or considered it. But anything warm and nutty on a cold day sounds fab!
Susanna,
I do urge you to try it. Hojicha is SO tasty. . .as I said, I find it addictive!
