A recent visit to Washington DC brought me to Teaism, a wonderful tea room (and tea shop) in our nation’s capital. The tea room and shop (just two doors down) came highly recommended, and after my visit, I can certainly see why!
My first stop was the tea shop, which offered a nice selection of quality teas, some incredible teaware (most of it with an Asian influence) and a sympathetic shop assistant who listened to my tales of woe regarding not being able to find a proper cup of tea whilst traveling.
The tea room/restaurant is likewise lovely: It is busy and casual, but also strangely peaceful and comforting. The counter staff clearly knows its product: A consultation with the counter attendant resulted in the perfect match of Golden Monkey black tea and a chocolate salty oat cookie. Service was fast and efficient. My only regret is that I was unable to return to Teaism. . .looking forward to my next trip to DC!
Establishment Type: Tea Room
Location: Washington DC (there are three locations, I visited the one at Penn Quarter)
Retail Tea: Yes, in their shop two doors down.
Atmosphere: Asian theme. Casual.
Product Mix: Classic teas (they offer tisanes, but other than their chai, they do not have any flavored teas on offer), food (both sweets as well as sandwiches, breakfast, and Asian foods). Asian and European-style afternoon tea is also available.
Best Bets: The bento boxes are lovely, as are the salty oat cookies. If you like black tea, or even if you don’t, try the Golden Monkey: It’s a wonderfully fragrant, spicy black tea. Don’t miss a mug of their hot chai. Heavy on the cardamom and oh so very, very good.
