Argo Jasmine Pearl Green Tea (review)

by Lainie P on October 30, 2008

Tea Name: Jasmine Pearls

Brand: Argo

Type: Green Tea, Jasmine

Form: Loose, formed into little “pearls”

Source: Argo Tea

Cost: $5.95 per oz, less in quantity.

Review:

This tea is beautiful to look at: Little rolled balls of two tea leaves and a bud, lightly perfumed with jasmine. The liquor is likewise stunning…a light gold with a hint of green.

This is the best tea that I have tried so far from Argo: It is lushly aromatic, with a slightly creamy mouthfeel which gives way to moderate astringency, but is also finely structured. The subtle vegetal-ness of this tea does not interfere with the jasmine. My post-mortem on the leaves showed a generous proportion of tips, and a very nice olive-green color.

The jasmine makes this perhaps unsuitable to serve with food, though as I have observed in the past, jasmine green teas can make a fine pairing with white chocolate.

Recommendation: As with most jasmine teas, do NOT oversteep or it will turn bitter. Given the beauty of this tea, and the fun in watching the rolled leaves unfurl, I’d advise brewing in a glass teapot, and pouring just when the liquor turns a pale gold. Can stand at least three steepings.
