Tea Name: East Frisian Leaf Blend
Brand: TeaGshwendner (Check out my review of TeaGshwender’s Chicago shop here)
Type: black tea (Blend of Assam and Sumatra Teas)
Form: loose leaf
Source: TeaGshwendner’s shop in Chicago
Cost: 100 grams for $6.90, less expensive if bought in larger quantities
Review: TeaGshwendner’s helpful labeling points out that this black tea is “medium quality”. Fair enough: It is rather strong, but it makes up for its lack of subtlety by being quite strong and hearty. Its liquor is dark brown, and its flavor has a strong roasted quality. (Coffee drinkers might well like this tea.) I’ve had it both with and without milk, and both styles are good.
East Frisian Leaf Blend makes a great iced tea, and may even be better suited to iced preparation than as a hot tea. It is super-strong, so it stands up well to the dilution process.
TeaGshwender recommends brewing for 5 minutes. I have found that this tea can get too bitter, so be very careful about brewing times and the amount of tea used. The tea leaves can stand a second and third infusion.
Recommendation: This is a good, strong, and inexpensive black tea that goes well with milk and is particularly tasty in the morning. Make with boiling water and drink as hot as you can stand it, unless, of course, you are making into iced tea.
